Dissolve the NTA: The June 21 Re-Exam and the Demand to Rebuild from Scratch

The same body that leaked the exam will conduct the re-exam. That sentence is the whole problem.

On 21 June 2026, lakhs of students will sit the NEET-UG re-exam — after the original 3 May paper was cancelled when a CBI investigation confirmed it had leaked. The re-test will be run by the National Testing Agency: the very agency now facing demands for its abolition.

The demand: dissolve and rebuild

Protesters, a doctors' body, and Opposition leaders are no longer asking for patches. The demand is the immediate dissolution of the NTA — currently registered as a society under the Societies Registration Act of 1860 — and the constitution of a new examination body established specifically through an Act of Parliament, with real statutory accountability.

Where the investigation stands

The leaked papers circulated through WhatsApp and Telegram groups, prompting the government to refer the matter to the CBI, which has made arrests in the case. A Parliamentary Standing Committee has met to review the investigation — with the CBI Director and the NTA Director General appearing before it.

Why "rebuild from scratch" is the point

[Our take] A society registered under an 1860 law was never built to secure the futures of more than twenty lakh students. The case for an Act-of-Parliament body is simple: a statutory agency can be held to statutory standards — audits, penalties, named accountability. Reform that leaves the same structure in place just resets the clock until the next leak. The re-exam on 21 June is necessary; it is not a fix.
